What is an agarwood bracelet?

An agarwood bracelet is a strand of beads turned from agarwood, the dark, resinous wood of Aquilaria trees, also called oud wood. In the wild, a tree forms that resin slowly after an injury. On a plantation, however, growers start the same process on purpose. As a result, nobody has to fell wild trees for it. That is why every agarwood bracelet here is plantation wood, never wild wood.

Every Aquilaria species sits in CITES Appendix II, so trade in agarwood follows set rules. Therefore we confirm the paperwork for your country with your quote. Also, resin forms unevenly, so no two agarwood bracelets weigh the same. That is why we weigh each one on camera and price it by the gram.

Below, you will find agarwood bracelets, 108-bead malas, rings, earrings and pendants: 182 styles in all. For example, 74 of them, or 41%, are single strands for the wrist. So browse by type, by pairing or by bead size. Or, if you already know your wrist size, start with the fitter.

What do real agarwood bracelets look like?

Real agarwood bracelets look darker, streakier and less even than renders. These 406 photographs show strands from Oudbracelet stock, across 48 styles, or 26% of our 182. There is no retouching of the grain. For example, one style can look lighter in one strand and darker in the next.

Why is every agarwood bracelet weighed?

Weighed pricing means your agarwood bracelet is quoted from its own scale reading, not a printed tag. We price plantation agarwood by weight, and no two strands weigh the same. So instead of a price tag, you get a video of your strand on the scale. It shows the exact weight and price. Then you approve it, and only after that do you pay.

According to Tan et al. (2019), agarwood resin forms only after a wound to an Aquilaria tree, and in uneven amounts. In our estimates, plantation agarwood runs from 0.60 to 0.95 g/cm³, so one agarwood bracelet can weigh up to 58% more than another of the same size. First we weigh, then we quote.

Which bead size suits an agarwood bracelet?

Bead size is the first choice for an agarwood bracelet, because the same wood looks very different at 6 mm and at 18 mm. For example, a 16 cm wrist takes 24 beads at 8 mm but only 15 at 14 mm. Also, 34% of the 182 styles come in more than one bead size.

Why a weighed quote

What does a weighed quote give you?

A weighed quote means the price follows your own agarwood bracelet, not an average. The table below compares it with a fixed price tag, point by point. For example, at 0.60 and 0.95 g/cm³, two strands of the same size differ in weight by 58%, yet a fixed tag charges both the same.

Does an agarwood bracelet sink or float?

Density is the answer: wood denser than water, above 1.0 g/cm³, sinks. Most woods are lighter than water, according to USDA Forest Products Laboratory data. First, take the weight we send you and the bead size. Then work out your strand’s density: weight divided by volume. For example, 16 beads of 12 mm weighing 11.8 g give 0.85 g/cm³, so that strand floats. However, most plantation agarwood bracelets float. So we quote the rare sinking agarwood bracelet separately, on request.

Open the density check

volume  = n × (⁴⁄₃πr³ − π·1²·d)

density = weight ÷ volume

example: 12 mm × 16 beads → 13.87 cm³

if it weighs 11.8 g → 0.85 g/cm³ · floats

Agarwood guide

Which agarwood bracelet guides should you read first?

The Agarwood Blog is a library of 44 guides by Wang Jianyu, founder of AgarwoodTown, and four of them are below. According to the References in each guide, the facts come from 166 published sources, such as CITES, GIA and Tan et al. (2019). For example, the first guide below is “Agarwood (Oud Wood): What It Is, How It Forms and How to Buy It”.

What do buyers ask about an agarwood bracelet?

This FAQ is a short set of 6 answers; the full page has 10. First find your question below. Each answer stands on its own, and every agarwood bracelet is weighed and filmed before you pay.

Why don’t you show prices?

A weighed quote is the price of one strand, read off the scale on video. We price agarwood by weight, and two strands of the same size never weigh the same. So a fixed price would only be a guess. Instead, we weigh the strand you will receive and film the reading. Then we quote you for that strand.

How do I get a quote?

First, open any style and choose a bead size and your wrist size. Then send us the request the page writes for you. In reply, we send a video of your strand on the scale, with its exact weight and its price.

Do I pay anything before I see my strand?

No. We charge nothing until you have seen the weighing video and approved the strand. Also, if you would like a darker strand, a different strand or more angles, just ask. Saying no at this stage costs you nothing either.

How do I pay?

Once you approve your strand, we send an invoice through PayPal for that amount. Then you can pay with a PayPal balance, or with a card through PayPal. In practice, PayPal handles the card details, so Oudbracelet never sees your card number. Finally, we pack and ship the strand from your video.

Is it real agarwood?

Yes. We cut every bead from cultivated, plantation agarwood; we do not sell wild-harvested wood. The trees belong to the Aquilaria genus, which CITES has listed in Appendix II since 2004. Also, you get the exact weight and bead size. So you can work out the density of your strand yourself.

Do you sell sinking-grade agarwood?

Yes. Sinking-grade agarwood is wood denser than water, above 1.0 g/cm³, and such wood is rare. The price of sinking wood also differs a lot from strand to strand. So we quote sinking strands separately, on request. Most plantation strands sit between 0.60 and 0.95 g/cm³ and float.

Our story

Who makes these agarwood bracelets?

Oudbracelet is the retail shop of AgarwoodTown, an agarwood business trading since 2014. We only work with plantation agarwood, never wild-harvested wood. Also, we sell it the way it changes hands everywhere else: by weight. So every customer gets their own strand, weighed and filmed, and a price for that strand alone. For example, AgarwoodTown supplies oud oil, bakhoor and incense to businesses, while Oudbracelet sells bracelets and small pieces to individual buyers.
