How many beads in a rosary? The short answer

How many beads in a rosary? A standard Catholic rosary has 59 beads. Fifty of them form five decades of ten, and nine more mark the prayers between and before them. Then a crucifix and a centre piece join the strand, but they are not counted as beads.

So the count comes straight from the order of prayers. Each decade is one Our Father and ten Hail Marys, and the opening has one Our Father and three Hail Marys.(USCCB) Add those up, and the answer to how many beads in a rosary is always 59 for the five-decade form.

According to the USCCB, the rosary opens with the Apostles’ Creed on the crucifix, then one Our Father and three Hail Marys. For example, count the pendant first, then the five decades. Finally, add the Our Father beads: 50 + 3 + 6 = 59 beads in total.

How many beads in a rosary, part by part

This table is a 5-row summary. First read the part of the rosary column, then compare the prayer, beads across each row. For example, the first row covers “Pendant, first bead”.

Part of the rosaryPrayerBeads
Pendant, first beadOur Father1
Pendant, next threeHail Mary3
Before each decadeOur Father5
Five decades of tenHail Mary50
Total—59

The Glory Be is said on the chain or space after each group, so it has no bead of its own. The crucifix and the centre piece are not beads either.

Every bead in the table matches one prayer in the USCCB order, so the total is always 59. First, the pendant carries 1 Our Father bead and 3 Hail Mary beads, so 4 beads in all. Second, each of the 5 decades holds 1 Our Father bead and 10 Hail Mary beads, or 55 beads. Finally, 4 plus 55 makes 59.

The Hail Mary beads make up 53 of the 59, or about 90% of the strand. The 6 Our Father beads make up the rest. For example, a rosary in 8 mm beads still has exactly 59 beads; only the loop length changes.

Part 1 — Why a rosary has that many beads

Simply put, the beads keep count, so the hands can count while the mind stays on the prayer. That is why a rosary has one bead for each Hail Mary and each Our Father. Also, the larger or spaced rosary beads let you feel where a decade starts without looking down.

Older forms were longer. For example, some traditions pray fifteen decades, and a few people still carry a strand that long. However, the everyday rosary most people buy today is the five-decade strand of 59 beads. Other faiths count differently: a Muslim tasbih often has 99 or 33 beads,(Britannica) and a Hindu or Buddhist mala usually has 108.(Britannica 2026)

Part 2 — How many beads in a rosary, and how long is the strand?

The length of a rosary is roughly the bead count times the bead size. Once you know how many beads in a rosary, the bead size does the rest. So 59 beads of 6 mm make a loop of about 35 cm, and 59 beads of 8 mm about 47 cm, before the pendant hangs below.

Next, think about the hand. Round rosary beads between 6 and 10 mm roll easily under the thumb. Smaller beads make a lighter rosary for a pocket, while larger beads make a heavier rosary for the home. Finally, wood is warm and quiet in the hand, which is why wooden rosary beads stay popular. For example, 59 Agarwood beads of 10 mm make a loop of about 59 cm. A loop that long suits the home better than a pocket.

Full rosary or bracelet: how many beads in each rosary?

This comparison is a 4-point check of Full rosary (59 beads) against Rosary bracelet (11 beads). For example, the first row compares beads. Finally, pick the column that matches what you need.

FeatureFull rosary (59 beads)Rosary bracelet (11 beads)

LengthAbout 35–47 cm loop at 6–8 mmSized to the wrist with cord
UseWhole rosary in one passCount one decade five times
Where it livesPocket, bag or homeOn the wrist all day

A full rosary is the 59-bead form for praying all five decades in one pass. The rosary bracelet is the 11-bead form for counting one decade five times round. In numbers, the bracelet keeps 11 of the 59 beads, or about 19% of the full strand. The prayers stay the same either way, according to the USCCB order of five decades.(USCCB)

In practice, the choice comes down to where the beads live. For example, a full rosary in 6 mm beads makes a loop of about 35 cm for a pocket or a bag. A rosary bracelet, by contrast, stays on the wrist all day.

So, how many beads in a rosary?

The answer is 59 beads for the standard five-decade rosary, and eleven beads for a one-decade rosary bracelet. The number follows the prayers, so the count never changes with the material. First, the opening uses 4 beads. Then the five decades use 55 beads.(USCCB) Finally, the crucifix and the centre piece add no beads at all. For example, a rosary in glass, wood or stone counts the same 59 beads.

If you would like rosary beads in agarwood, we string plain round beads to 59 or eleven. The wood is plantation-grown, and every strand ships under CITES rules.(CITES) Browse our agarwood rosary beads, and we film your strand before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

This FAQ is a set of 8 short answers about how many beads in a rosary? 59, counted part by part. First find your question below. For example, many facts in these answers about how many beads in a rosary? 59, counted part by part come from the 4 published sources in References, which we checked in September 2026.

How many beads are in a Catholic rosary?

A standard Catholic rosary has 59 beads: fifty Hail Mary beads in five decades of ten, three more Hail Mary beads on the pendant, and six Our Father beads. The crucifix and the centre piece join the strand but are not counted as beads.

How many beads are in a decade of the rosary?

Ten Hail Mary beads make one decade. A single Our Father bead sits before each decade, usually set apart by a larger bead or a longer space, so the fingers can feel where one decade ends and the next one starts without looking.

How many beads are on a rosary bracelet?

Usually eleven: one decade of ten Hail Mary beads plus one Our Father bead, often with a small cross or medal. Because eleven beads rarely reach round a wrist, the rest of the loop is made up with cord, chain or small spacer beads.

Why does a rosary have 59 beads?

Because each bead stands for one prayer. The rosary opens with one Our Father and three Hail Marys, then each of the five decades has one Our Father and ten Hail Marys. Counting those prayers gives exactly 59 beads for the five-decade form.

Is the Glory Be said on a bead?

No. The Glory Be is usually said on the chain or in the space after each group of Hail Marys, so it has no bead of its own. That is why it does not change the total of 59 beads on a standard five-decade rosary.

What bead size is best for a rosary?

Round beads between 6 and 10 mm are the comfortable range, because they roll easily under the thumb. Smaller beads make a light rosary for a pocket, while larger beads make a heavier strand for the home. We string agarwood rosary beads in the size you choose.

Do you make the crucifix and centre piece?

No. We string the wooden beads only, as a 59-bead strand or an eleven-bead decade loop. You bring the crucifix, centre piece or medal you prefer, or a jeweller adds them. We say this plainly before we quote, so nothing is charged by surprise.

Are wooden rosary beads a good choice?

Many people prefer them. Wood is light, warm to hold and quiet against other beads. Agarwood adds dark resin lines that differ on every bead. Keep wooden rosary beads dry, wipe them with a soft cloth after use, and they last for years.
